UT San Antonio Symphony Orchestra  
Concerto & Aria Competition, 2025-26 

  

The 2025–26 UT San Antonio Symphony Orchestra Concerto & Aria Competition will take place in the School of Music Recital Hall: 
Monday, December 8, 6:00–9:00 p.m. – Instrumental Auditions 
Tuesday, December 9, 6:00–9:00 p.m. – Voice Auditions 

 

Competition Rules 

  1. The Concerto & Aria Competition is open only to regular, full-time, degree-seeking music majors who are enrolled in private instruction. 
  2. Applicants must submit their completed application form to the School of Music Office by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, November 24th.  A non-refundable $25 entry fee must be submitted online. Applicants who need financial assistance to cover the entry fee should contact Asieh Mahyar about a fee waiver (asieh.mahyar@utsa.edu). 
  3. The UT San Antonio Symphony Orchestra Director will select judges and arrange the audition process. 
  4. Selection of music: 
    1. May be a work for a single soloist OR up to four collaborative soloists 
    2. Concerto movement (instrumental), opera or oratorio aria (vocal), or any other work featuring a soloist with published orchestral accompaniment 
    3. Instrumental movements/works must not exceed 20 minutes 
    4. Vocal works must not exceed 15 minutes 
  5. Competition winners will be invited to perform with the UT San Antonio Symphony Orchestra as guest soloists in the Spring 2026 semester. Winners must perform the same piece at the concert which was performed at the audition. 
  6. Competition winners must be available to rehearse with the UT San Antonio Symphony Orchestra during the regular rehearsal times (MWF, 12:00–1:30 p.m.) in the month preceding the concert. 
  7. The audition will be a maximum length of eight minutes. If the composition is longer than eight minutes, the performer (in consultation with the private instructor) should choose an excerpt of no more than eight minutes. Candidates who play for more than eight minutes in their audition will be asked to stop immediately but will not be disqualified. 
  8. Memorization is strongly encouraged for the audition and orchestral performance.
