Welcome to the Department of English at the University of Texas at San Antonio. We’re proud of the important role we play at UTSA: with over 400 undergraduate majors and 100 masters and doctoral students, our department is one of the most active on campus.
We offer a broad array of courses, from Multiethnic Literatures of the U.S. to Postcolonial Studies, from Specialized Professional Writing to Creative Non-Fiction, from Chaucer to Toni Morrison. In addition to a focus on literature, undergraduate students can also choose a concentration in Creative Writing, Professional Writing, or English Language Arts and Reading (for those who plan to teach high school English)—and soon, our newest concentration in Black, Indigenous, and Latinx Literatures. At the graduate level, we offer certificates in creative writing, rhetoric and composition, and linguistics—all in addition to our M.A. in English.
Our faculty is engaged in exciting research and creative productivity, and they bring their enthusiasm for their scholarly work to the classroom. One of the things that we as a department are most proud of is our commitment to diversity and inclusion. It’s a commitment that is evident in our teaching, scholarship, and creative work, and we will ensure a safe and open space for critical inquiry—wherever that inquiry may take you.
As the pandemic (hopefully) continues to recede, we’re excited to welcome you back on campus both in the classroom and as we work back to our regular schedule of events throughout the year. Please feel free to contact me or our staff if you have any questions, or stop by for a visit.
We appreciate your interest in the Department of English and extend our warmest welcome to you from the Department.
