The San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, no-kill organization that has served Bexar County and its surrounding areas since 1952. As a no-kill organization, the SAHS shelters, medically treats and rehabilitates approximately 5,000 dogs and cats each year. The SAHS is not affiliated with nor receives regular financial support from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Many of the pets in our care have been surrendered, abandoned, or found as strays and may often require medical intervention or rehabilitation due to abuse, injury, or disease. We rely on the generosity of our community to help ensure we are always able to provide shelter, food, and more to every pet in our care. We firmly believe donating locally helps solve a local problem. Through our outreach efforts, programs, and services, we hope to continue to instill the importance of pet ownership to the public.

The Esperanza Peace and Justice Center advocates for those wounded by domination and inequality, standing up for women, people of color, queer and working class communities, the poor, and the earth itself. Interns are integral to this mission of social and environmental justice, cultural preservation, and community engagement. We are likewise committed to the professional development of interns and strive to provide them with a quality-learning environment, in order to foster the skills necessary for job placement and advancement in various nonprofit, arts, social advocacy, and community organizing fields.
Internships require a minimum commitment of 120-150 hours per academic semester (roughly 10-15 hours a week) with a regular weekly schedule.
Because this is an unpaid internship, students are highly encouraged to support their work via fellowships, scholarships, or other private funds. Arrangements can be made with the student’s school for course credit.
Due to the complex nature of the work, we prefer applicants in their Senior year of undergraduate study. We also give preference to students who are bilingual (Spanish/English) and comfortable interacting within community settings. Interns will work under the direct supervision of the Esperanza staff, and in addition to their program area, will have the opportunity to work on a range of issues and projects. For this reason, the ideal applicant will be highly flexible and able to alternate between long-term projects and immediate organizational needs.
Because the work environment is extremely busy and oftentimes hectic, we also need applicants to be able to work independently some of the time, but also be comfortable asking for guidance when they need it.
Candidates should have prior experience with press release layout and content management. Technical skills with programs such as Microsoft Word a must, but familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign and Photoshop is a plus!
Please send a letter of interest and a resume/CV/work samples, via email to esperanza@esperanzacenter.org Please use "UTSA Internship" as subject line.

We have two positions open for interns and can offer a broad range of experience in crisis communications, public and media relations, marketing and governmental relations. You can find out more about us at our Website below. We are one half of what was formerly GDC, and Rachel came to work for us last year before we formed our own company. We were so impressed with her skills and intelligence that we took her with us! We can’t wait until she graduates in December and we can have her full-time. I know she has learned a great deal in a short amount of time and she has thrived with her on-the-job training experience. Next year is gearing up to be a busy one for us and we have lots of opportunity for other hardworking students like Rachel to learn about the business and try their hand writing press releases, talking to clients, organizing press conferences and strategizing about social media marketing.
