UTSA Faculty

Jeffery Hutchinson, Ph.D. has a terminal degree in Agronomy with a focus on Weed Science, a Master’s in Forestry, and a Bachelor’s in Wildlife Ecology. He brings fourteen years of experience working with state and federal agencies, and non-government organizations. He is responsible for working with faculty to provide summer enrichment experiences to students and coordinating field trips related to research activities; research seminars and workshops  

Vikram Kapoor, Ph.D. brings highly interdisciplinary that cuts across diverse fields, including wastewater, stormwater, environmental remediation, watershed science, and nanotechnology. The tools applied and the overall mission of water sustainability provide unifying threads. He has extensive experience working with local and state agencies, such as San Antonio River Authority, San Antonio Water Systems, and Texas General Land Office. He is responsible for working with faculty to provide summer enrichment experiences and coordinating field trips related to research activities, seminars, and workshops. 

Sue Hum, Ph.D. brings over 20 years of experience in developing curricula, instituting large-scale curriculum changes across multiple sections, training instructors to redesign courses, training students to work with faculty to provide feedback on student writing, and creating assessments that address institutional measures. She is responsible for guiding faculty in science writing pedagogy, anti-racist pedagogy, and counter-storytelling outcomes. She will also work with communication fellows to provide constructive feedback and support faculty goals. 

Gwen Young, Ph.D. brings 6 years of experience in developing curricula, student and faculty instruction, student professional development, and grant writing at UTSA. She has 10 years of experience working in the public energy sector and 6 years of experience in community leadership as San Antonio Women’s Chamber of Commerce Director at large. She will work on provide summer enrichment experiences and field trips related to research activities. 

OLLU Faculty

Briana Salas, Ph.D. brings 11 years of expertise in undergraduate science education and curriculum development, field and lab work, data collection and analysis, and manuscript preparation/publication. She also has 7 years of experience coordinating local and regional outdoor field trips with strong networking ties to the local community. She will work on research, communication, & workshop opportunities, and build community outreach pathways.

Jamie Crosswhite, Ph.D. over ten years’ experience in writing place-based narratives, professional writing, K-12 education and curriculum, secondary agricultural programs, and rural community outreach. She is responsible for training science faculty in writing pedagogy and counter-storytelling outcomes. She will also develop a new course, Writing in the Sciences, and co-teach summer enrichment course at OLLU.  

NLC Faculty

Laura Perry, M.A. brings over 14 years of experience in undergraduate science education and serves as the lead instructor at NLC for the Biology I, II, and Environmental Biology lecture and lab courses. She is a trained Climate Reality Leader and has organized various field trips, panel presentations, and partnerships with local agencies for both her students and the community. She will also coordinate with the Judson High School (HS) liaison
