Mexican sculptor Jorge Yázpik creates with a contemporary, minimalist aesthetic that also reflects the sacred geometries of pre-Columbian art and artifacts. Yázpik works in a range of forms including the intimate scale of rings, 3-dimensional drawings, and carvings for pedestals and outdoor spaces. In remarkable diversity of semi-precious stones and crystal, silver and steel, paper and wood, the artist poses questions regarding the inherent characteristics of beautiful materials and the demands of cultural aesthetics and transformations. Surfaces and open volumes are at once intuitive and composed, prompting viewers’ consideration of their own engagement with their environments.
Mentored by Mexican Ruptura artist Manuel Felguérez, one of the pioneers of Mexican Geometrism, Yázpik’s work demonstrates the enduring intellectual and creative challenges and possibilities in abstract art. Yázpik’s work has been featured internationally in solo and collective exhibitions, including the Museo Soumaya, Museo de Arte Moderno, Museo Rufino Tamayo and Casa Barragán in Mexico City; the Museo de Arte Moderno in Cali, Colombia; the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Montevideo, Uruguay; the Petit Palais in Paris; the 2000 Expo Hannover, Germany; and the 2015 Expo Milano, Italy.
This exhibition is the first solo exhibition of Yázpik’s work in the United States, and is accompanied with a printed catalog.
All exhibitions are free and open to the public.
