Assistant Professor of Music - Orchestra Director

The School of Music at the University of Texas at San Antonio seeks qualified applicants for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Music to serve as Director of the UTSA Orchestra.

The successful candidate will conduct and serve as music director for the UTSA Orchestra, a full symphony orchestra serving as a premiere ensemble for the School of Music. The position entails collaborating with other ensembles and faculty, including conducting the orchestra for a yearly opera, organizing the Concerto and Aria Competition, and holding auditions. Additional responsibilities may include teaching conducting for instrumental music education majors, offering conducting lessons for graduate students, administrative oversight of the UTSA String Project, or other courses depending on the candidate’s areas of expertise and departmental need. The successful candidate is expected to recruit for the School of Music and engage in scholarship and service as part of a tenure track appointment. Salary and supporting start-up packages are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate in music (ABD candidates will be considered).
  • Evidence of successful conducting experience with university and/or semi-professional/professional orchestras.
  • Demonstrated artistic leadership, excellence, and collaboration in cultivating and managing a large orchestra program, and evidence of effective recruiting. 
  • The successful candidate must also demonstrate an ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of various urban populations, supporting the University’s commitment as a Hispanic Serving Institution and a model for student success. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Public school or university teaching experience, a record of service, and evidence of creative/scholarly contributions to the field, including guest conducting and demonstrated success in regional and/or national music venues.
