Bio
Breahna Luera-Peck is Assistant Professor of Practice in History at the University of Texas at San Antonio and Assistant Director of the Knowledge for Freedom program. As a first-generation student, she earned her B.A. and M.A. in History from UT San Antonio and an A.A. in Teaching from San Antonio College.
As an educator, Professor Luera-Peck is committed to teaching students how to think critically about the past through primary-source analysis, historical research, and civic engagement. She has experience teaching U.S. History from the Civil War to the Present, and she has assisted teaching courses on the history and philosophy of democracy and historical research methods.
Her research focuses on power, resistance, and identity in the nineteenth- and twentieth-century United States. Her master's research examined the soundscape of the antebellum South, exploring how enslaved African Americans and enslavers used sound to reinforce, negotiate, and challenge systems of power. Her broader research interests include African American history, the history of race and medicine, public history, sensory history, general U.S. history, and community-centered historical interpretation.
