Welcome to the Department of English at the University of Texas at San Antonio. We’re proud of the important role we play at UTSA: with over 400 undergraduate majors and 100 masters and doctoral students, our department is one of the most active on campus.
We offer a broad array of courses, from Multiethnic Literatures of the U.S. to Postcolonial Studies, from Specialized Professional Writing to Creative Non-Fiction, from Chaucer to Toni Morrison. In addition to a focus on literature, undergraduate students can also choose a concentration in Creative Writing, Professional Writing, or English Language Arts and Reading (for those who plan to teach high school English)—and soon, our newest concentration in Black, Indigenous, and Latinx Literatures. At the graduate level, we offer certificates in creative writing, rhetoric and composition, and linguistics—all in addition to our M.A. in English.
Our faculty is engaged in exciting research and creative productivity, and they bring their enthusiasm for their scholarly work to the classroom. It’s a commitment that is evident in our teaching, scholarship, and creative work, and we will ensure a safe and open space for critical inquiry—wherever that inquiry may take you.
As the pandemic (hopefully) continues to recede, we’re excited to welcome you back on campus both in the classroom and as we work back to our regular schedule of events throughout the year. Please feel free to contact me or our staff if you have any questions, or stop by for a visit.
The students and alumni of the UTSA Department of English achieve remarkable things both during their time in the program and after graduation. Each student contributes uniquely to our department, leaving an indelible mark on our community. Our pride in these extraordinary individuals extends far beyond their tenure with us!
I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Creative Writing from UTSA in 2017. I am currently working as a Social Media Manager for GSD&M, where a create content for the US Air Force and Pizza Hut Corporate. In the past I have collaborated with Jamie Lee Curtis, writing a story to accompany a product release and have had a poem published in a poetry collection.
We appreciate your interest in the Department of English and extend our warmest welcome to you from the Department.

Remembering Wendy BarkerOn any given day in her forty years at The University of Texas at San Antonio, you might have found Wendy Barker leaning forward in a classroom, listening intently as a student read their work aloud. She might have been nodding, smiling, and saying, “Yes, yes,” in that warm, encouraging way her students never forgot. Barker, a poet and professor of English and creative writing who passed away in 2023, had a gift for making each person feel seen. Her legacy lives on in her poetry, in the programs she helped build, and in the lives of her students, colleagues, and her husband, Steven Kellman, an esteemed scholar of comparative literature and professor at UT San Antonio.
