Join us in congratulating UTSA art alum and faculty Joe Harjo for being one of the 15 artists selected for this year's Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship! Harjo was selected from a pool of 154 artist applications.

Each recipient will receive $60k in grants over a 5 year period to support the research and development of their art practice. Joe has been selected for his installations that challenge the erasure and misrepresentation of Native culture in America, advocating for resilience, empowerment, and social justice.

"I am humbled and honored to receive the Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship, which will provide the financial stability and professional support I need to sustain and grow my studio practice long-term," says Harjo, Professor of Instruction for the UTSA School of Art. "This opportunity will allow me to gain essential financial knowledge and create a lasting legacy as an artist, educator and advocate. The fellowship will also provide the mentorship and resources needed to help me navigate the demands of a rigorous practice, challenges of underrepresentation, and systemic barriers, contributing to my overall well-being."

Harjo has spent the last several years ever-evolving his work, which has shown in his numerous exhibitions (solo and group), residencies, and grants.
