Biography

April Montemayor is a first-generation student at The University of Texas at San Antonio studying Sociology and Public Health with a concentration in Epidemiology and Disease Control. She grew up in the lower Rio Grande Valley, in the city of San Benito, Texas, and currently lives in San Antonio. April is passionate about social justice issues and has found several ways to be an activist in her community throughout the years. She is on the board of several on-campus organizations, including PERIOD, which strives to make menstrual hygiene and menstrual health education more accessible, and the Mental Health Team organization, which works towards ending the stigma around mental health. For the past few years, she has worked with progressive organizations and has been able to register hundreds of people to vote in Bexar County. April is interested in researching the ways in which Public Health and Sociology intersect in Latinx communities. She hopes to combine her passions with her research and continue to inspire change in her community.
