Biography

Joshua De Leon is a UTSA undergraduate studying Women’s Studies with a minor in Communications. As a male-presenting person, Joshua understands the privilege he has within society and wants to use said privilege in order to liberate disempowered communities. With a wide variety of research possibilities, Joshua continues to find himself turning back to political discourses, specifically researching how to address and dismantle the founding principles of patriarchy and colonialism. This research interest and passion for understanding the reasons behind the creation of particular belief systems stems from a childhood filled with curiosity. His main goal through this research is to understand and dismantle institutionalized forms of oppression aimed at Women, the LGBTQ+ Community, and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color). By doing so, Joshua hopes to create a future that liberates and values every single person and the entirety of their identity.

When he is not pursuing his academic endeavours, Joshua is often in a coffee shop either working behind the bar or working on poetry on the couch. The love for politics, coffee, and art is what keeps Joshua going in his everyday life. In the future, he hopes to open his own non-profit organization focused on helping minority communities, especially the LGBTQ+  community. In this non-profit, he hopes to combine his love for politics, coffee, and art and create a space where people from all backgrounds can gather and feel empowered and loved, if only for a moment. While his goals are quite ambiguous, the fire in Joshua’s heart continues to burn and his will to make this world a better place continues to grow with each passing day.
