Marina Madden

Bio

Born in Austin, TX as Marina Lori Herring, but called, "RED," most of her life, after her grandfather, Red Herring—mostly, when she had gotten herself into mischief. Red Madden is a Texas Daughter of design, education, media and music, from an early age she closely coexisted with musicians, artists, historians, teachers and of course, Longhorns and Cowboys. Red came of age among cohorts of talented performers, radio broadcasters and would be heavily influenced by her touring Country & Western father but also her mother—a special ed teacher, technophile and graphic designer. "I was exposed to music and visual performance early, then using the first version of Photoshop before MS Word, when it hit the shelf for new designers like my mom, in the early 90s."

As an undergrad, Madden studied Visual Arts, Radio-TV-Film and multimedia first at San Antonio College, then pursued a Communication Design degree and continued her passion for radio broadcasting at Texas State University, completing her BFA in 2003. Being very involved with the local music industry, throughout her college career, she continued to program, produce and host her broadcast-radio show, "Red Herring's Romper Room” on two college radio stations, KSYM 90.1FM & KTSW 89.9FM, along the I-35 corridor in central Texas until 2004.

Before becoming an educator, Red worked in marketing and advertising as a creative professional until taking an adjunct position in 2008 at a small career college. "Teaching set my heart on fire!"

Madden left advertising to teach full time and enrolled in the School of Communication Arts at Savannah College of Art and Design—SCAD—completing an MFA in Graphic Design and teaching in Higher Ed ever since. Red has served as faculty for both private and public institutions including the Art Institutes of Houston, University of Texas at Austin, and currently at the University of Texas at San Antonio—UTSA, Roadrunner Nation. In 2019, UTSA became an official Adobe Creative Campus. In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses for the UTSA Department of Communication, Madden serves as the department's Internship Coordinator, as well as the "back-up" co-webmaster and social media manager for COLFA and Communication. Since 2015, Madden has also contributed, organized, chaired and co-chaired the department's annual on-campus conference, "COMweek—Communication Week is an in-house academic and professional development conference our department brings to majors, connecting knowledge to industry and COM classrooms to careers.

Also in 2015, Red began serving as the Faculty Advisor on Record for the American Advertising Federation (AAF) College Chapter at UTSA. Since Spring 2016, Madden has taken four teams of UTSA students to the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) to compete at the AAF District 10 NSAC & Convention, “ADvent10n.” The NSAC team from UTSA competes in the form of developing an Advertising Campaign Plans Book & LIVE Pitch for a national brand against 19 other university teams from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas—since 2016, the team has developed campaigns for Snapple®, Tai Pei® Frozen Cuisine, Ocean Spray® and Adobe Experience Cloud® for Advertising.

In early 2017, Red Madden became a member of the International Academy of Business Disciplines (IABD) under the mentorship of Dr. Ali Kanso and Chair Paul LeBlanc. In both 2017 & 2018, Madden has presented ongoing research at the annual IABD conferences, in the Advertising and Marketing Communication tracks.

In Fall 2019, Red Madden joined the 11th Cohort of Leadership UTSA, aka, "LUTSA." In Fall 2020, Red was invited back to join the LUTSA planning team for the first ever Virtual Leadership UTSA program—VLUTSA, due to COVID-19—to celebrate the last 12 years of cohorts of leadership and community-building at UTSA.
