Bio

Spring 2024 Office Hours: Mondays-Fridays from 11:00AM-12:00PM.

David Hanen has taught at UTSA for the History Department for almost 30 years specializing in the instruction of introductory U.S. History courses.  He earned his B.A. in History from Missouri Southern State University in 1981 and his M.A. in History from UTSA in 1995.  Throughout his career, he has earned the respect of both colleagues and students as evidenced by the 2011 UTSA University Excellence Award for Teaching Excellence and the Innovations and Impact Award he won as part of a collaborative group in 2020.  He regularly teaches high enrollment courses maintaining some of the highest student evaluations consistently for over 28 years in a row.

In addition to the historical narrative, he works hard to stay up to date with the latest innovations to create courses that are both engaging and challenging.  Students experience his unique talent for lecturing and ability to explain difficult concepts in ways that make sense. They also learn using innovative tools as he constantly seeks to find the technology that matches with his pedagogical practices to deliver an effective course.  Students often say they leave his course with a fresh sense of how to succeed, not only in his course, but in college in general.
