In addition to many large ensemble opportunities, the Department of Music offers small instrumental ensembles such as Percussion Ensemble, New Music Ensemble, Tuba Ensemble, Flute Ensemble, Trombone Choir, Mariachi Ensemble, and Guitar Ensemble.

Percussion Ensemble

Focusing on the performance of music written for a wide variety of percussion instruments, the Percussion Ensemble presents at least one formal concert each semester Members are matched by skill level for rehearsal of small and large ensemble works varying from multi-percussion set-ups to marimba choir.

One concert per school year features an internationally known guest artist. Past guests include Steve Houghton, Michael Burritt, and Chris Hanning.

Flute Ensemble

Devoted to the performance of diverse music written for flute choir, the UTSA Flute Ensemble maintains an active schedule of performances. In addition to on-campus performances and recitals, they have been invited to perform at the National Flute Association (NFA) Convention (2020, 2021), Texas Flute Society festival (2021), Austin Flute Society festival (2022), and San Diego Flute Guild festival (2021). Committed to expanding repertoire, in 2021 the UTSA Flute Ensemble commissioned four new works for flute choir, all of which were performed at the 2021 NFA Convention. Other activities include playing for receptions and outreach concerts at assisted living communities.

New Music Lab

The New Music Lab focuses on the creation and interpretation of new music. We work closely with some of the leading voices of contemporary music today, explore electronics and improvisation, and collaborate with artists from other disciplines, including visual artists and dancers. Every semester the New Music Lab performs at the SoundSpace series at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin and in other off-campus venues. Students of all abilities are welcome. UTSA Trombone Choir

The UTSA Trombone Choir is devoted to expanding the creative scope of the trombone ensemble. To this end, the group performs music from a variety of musical traditions, including jazz, gospel, klezmer, Baroque, Renaissance, and avant-garde, and actively commissions new works by leading composers.

Recent highlights include the production of a monumental work for 80 trombones at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, performing the National Anthem the San Antonio Spurs Game, and at the Big 12 Trombone Conference and T.M.E.A. Performances have been featured on television and profiled in NewMusicBox, Culturmap Austin, and local NPR-affiliates.
