Introduction:Charts Handout

The handout on Period 1: Handout 1

This is on the period of time before Reconstruction. The information provided in this period concerns the years between 1855 and 1865.

The second handout on Period 2:Handout 2

This period concerns the years after the Civil War, during Reconstruction (up to 1873).In 1873, Edmund Davis was defeated in his reelection bid for the Governorís seat. The result was the defeat of the Radical Republicans by the Conservative Republicans allied with the Democrats. An important note is the loss of African American Votes in this election by the Radicals.

The third handout on Period 3:Handout 3

The quest examines what is taking place between James Newcomb, African Americans, and the Republican Party. This information occurs in the 1880s and 1890s.Mr. Newcomb is still active in Republican politics within San Antonio and Texas. However, he has never been able to recapture the successes that he and the Radical Republicans enjoyed during Congressional Reconstruction prior to 1873.It is interesting to examine what he says, the words he uses, and how he feels in these letters and articles.Remember, James Newcomb is a product of his time and he reflected the opinion of a large number of white Republicans during this period (especially ex-Unionist and ex-Radicals).
