“Integrating the insights of earlier care theorists with the aims of traditional justice theorists, The Heart of Justice offers the first full account of the institutions and policies of a caring society.”
“Elegantly written … an innovative contribution to the literature on the origins
of the modern state.”
—Maurizio Viroli
I grew up in Littleton, Colorado and earned my bachelor’s degree at Colorado College. I then moved to Chicago where I earned my Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. I taught at Tulane University in New Orleans for a year in 1997-1998 before arriving at the University of Texas at San Antonio where I currently teach in the Political Science Department.
I teach courses on the history of political thought, including ancient, modern & contemporary political thought, contemporary theories of justice and ethics. My first book, Divine Sovereignty, traces the development of modern state power, including the concepts of legislative sovereignty and executive prerogative, in early modern French and English political thought. My forthcoming book, The Heart of Justice, builds upon the work of contemporary care theorists in order to translate care theory into a theory of justice for the basic institutions and policies of society.
