PhD Application Process

All applications are handled through  UTSA's online application system ("embark"). The online application system and instructions for using the system can be found at http://graduateschool.utsa.edu/graduate-admissions/graduate-application/. Please note that each graduate program has its own application procedure. If you have applied for other UTSA graduate programs, you will still need to apply separately for the PhD in Psychology program.

Using the application system

When you login to the application system, be sure to specify the program for which you are applying (i.e., Psychology, Doctor of Philosophy). During the application process, you will be asked to enter the following information.

  • The semester for which you are applying (this will always be Fall; we do not accept applicants for other terms)
  • The year for which you are applying
  • Previously earned degrees
  • GRE scores
  • Master’s level courses you have completed (You should specify whether you have completed the course at UTSA or elsewhere or if you have not taken the course or an equivalent. Although we ask for your transcripts, this information helps us determine if you are eligible for unconditional admission)
  • Texas residency information

After that, you will see several upload pages. The system allows you to upload one file for each upload page. Only two of these are required.

  • Documentation of Prior Research Experience - The preferred form is a completed Master’s thesis, but published research articles, a manuscript prepared for publication, or a paper submitted for credit in an independent or honors study project are acceptable alternatives
  • Statement of Career Goals - This statement is used by the Psychology Doctoral Program Admissions Committee to determine how well your research interests fit with the program goals, identify potential advisors, and determine how well your past experience and education have prepared you for successful completion of our doctoral program

There is a third page should you feel the need to upload additional documents, but it is not required. More information on each section can be found in the application system itself. If you do not see the pages above in the application system, you might want to go back to the beginning and make sure you selected the right program.

Application Deadlines

We only accept applications for Fall semester. To be considered for admission, all materials must be received by February 1 for all applicants. Applicants interested in receiving financial aid should submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the appropriate office by March 15. Applying well in advance of the deadline also helps protect against issues such as slow delivery of transcripts, GRE scores, or letters of recommendation
