Mission Statement

The Department of Political Science and Geography offers a wide range of courses designed to educate students about geography, the international system, other countries' political systems and cultures as well as political and social institutions and issues within the United States. The faculty emphasizes critical thought and conceptual understanding, and is committed to assisting students in furthering their academic and professional careers. The department strives to:

  • Encourage and nurture intellectual growth;
  • Provide students with opportunities to explore and celebrate diversity

Goals

  • Optimize student levels of academic success and potential for life-long achievement in their field of study.
  • Introduce the substance and methods of Political Science and Geography to UTSA students in order to involve them in the local, regional, and international community.
  • Provide a curriculum that will aid in the students understanding of the historical development of political institutions and the functions of government.
  • Provide students with an understanding of the role of political leadership in politics, government, and society.
  • Provide students with outstanding skills and knowledge required for professional careers and competitive graduate programs.
  • Provide advocacy for faculty and students in the department.
  • Expand horizons of awareness of domestic and global conditions
  • Deepen awareness of how political systems address particular conditions
  • Identify and respond to the academic needs of the students.
  • Strategize to meet these goals and objectives in an effective, efficient, and ethical manner.
