Preparing tomorrow's leaders for success!

Through its Master of Arts Program, the Department of Political Science at the University of Texas at San Antonio aims to prepare tomorrow's leaders for success.

The program provides students with an opportunity to receive advanced training in political science methodologies and theories, and offers specializations in American Politics, International Relations, and Political Theory and Law.

The M.A. in Political Science is a versatile degress that provides students with a set of transferable skills that are necessary for success in any workplace, including research design, quantitative and qualitative research methods, theory and argumentation, critical thinking and analysis, writing skills, and presentation skills.

Graduates leave the program prepared for careers in a variety of fields, including:

Law and legal services

Government at all levels


Public policy

Public service





Non-profit organization


Campaigns and elections







Recent graduates from the program are currently teaching politics courses in community colleges and four-year universities, working for local and state politicians in San Antonio and Austin, working for the United States’ foreign service, working for community and grass-roots organizations and pursuing their PhDs and law degrees.

The program offers personalized learning opportunities, including:

  • Small classes that meet once a week in the evening
  • Internships with government, campaigns, non-profits, corporations, NGOs
  • Opportunities to study abroad or in Washington, DC through special programs
  • Competitive scholarships for promising students
  • Research and teaching assistantships
  • An active Graduate Student Organization that sponsors events throughout the academic year
  • Online classes available

Program Requirements:

The program consists of 36 hours: 

  • 6 hours of required courses: POL 5003 Political Inquiry, POL 5013 Research Methods.
  • 6 hours selected from the following 9 hours: POL 5043 International Politics, POL 5063 Political Philosophy, POL 5153 American Government and Politics.
  • 18 hours of graduate classes (6 hours of outside the major may be accepted)
  • 6 hours of Master's Thesis of Master's Reseach Project

Students wishing to apply to the Master of Arts Program in Political Science for the Fall 2016 semester must submit the following materials to the UTSA graduate admissions office:

  • An application form (available online);
  • An application fee;
  • Official transcripts from all collegiate institutions attended including community colleges;
  • A statement of purpose (roughly 500 words or two typed pages) indicating your interest and goals in studying political science; and
  • Three letters of recommendation, two must be from someone familiar with your academic or professional qualifications;
  • GRE or LSAT scores
