UTSA Student Wins First Place in Japanese Speech Contest

February 12, 2014

Kim Andrew, a UTSA student in intermediate Japanese, won first place in the 25th Japanese Speech Contest held at San Antonio College on February 8.  Andrews will compete in the statewide competition in Houston this March.

The annual event, sponsored jointly by the Japan American Society of Texas, the Japanese Teachers Association of Texas, and the Consulate General of Japan, provided participants an opportunity to demonstrate their oral communication skills in Japanese. Contestants were judged on their speaking proficiency in two categories, poetry recitation and original free-style speech.

In addition to Andrew, six other UTSA students of intermediate and advanced Japanese participated:  Melissa Arellano, Gandhi Nishant, William McGarity, George Wilborn, Jonathan Williamson, and Katie Fredericks.
