Wallace appointed to Licensed Court Interpreter Advisory Board

August 28, 2014

Dr. Melissa Wallace, Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, has been appointed by the Supreme Court of Texas to the Licensed Court Interpreter Advisory Board of the Judicial Branch Certification Commission. The Court Interpreter Advisory Board is being constituted for the first time, and will advise legislators and the Office of Court Administration on issues related to identifying, documenting and prioritizing interpreting and language access concerns for Texas courts.

Wallace served for two terms in a similar capacity as an appointed member of the Supreme Court Committee to Improve Translation and Interpreting in Wisconsin Courts before accepting a position as Assistant Professor at UTSA. Currently she directs the Graduate Certificate in Spanish Translation and Interpreting Studies. Policy is a significant part of Wallace’s research agenda, and it is her expectation that this appointment will draw UTSA into the national dialog on court interpreting and language access.

UTSA is the only university in the region with graduate-level studies in translation and interpreting, and the Department of Modern Languages will be offering a new graduate seminar on legal translation and interpreting in the spring of 2015.
