Senior Seminar Students Curate Public Exhibit In Special Collections

Students in Dr. Catherine Komisaruk's senior seminar class "Food and Cooking in Mexico," have completed the installation of a public exhibit in the JPL Special Collections.  The exhibit, titled "Alcohol and Social Class in Mexico," highlights various aspects of the production, marketing, and consumption of alcoholic beverages spanning over 150 years of Mexican History. 

The display is made up of items from UTSA's libraries, primarily Special Collections, that include the Mexican Cookbook Collection and the Mexican Spirits Collection.  Selected items showcase the complexity of social hierarchies that have characterized Mexican political, economic, and cultural life for centuries.

 

**The exhibit is now open and will run until the end of the Fall semester.  It's located just outside the Special Collections reading room on the 4th floor of the JPL.

2017 COLFA Research Conference

Congratulations to Sheena Taylor and Michael McDonald, who won prizes for the papers they delivered at this year's COLFA Research Conference! 

Sheena won 4th place in the Undergraduate category for her paper "No Mail, Low Morale: The 688th Central Postal Directory Battalion During World War II," which she wrote for Kirsten Gardner's HIS 4973 section on women in the military. 

Michael won 1st place in the Graduate category for his paper "World War I and African-American Expectations from Martial Citizenship," which he wrote for Kolleen Guy's HIS 4973 on World War I.

GRE Information

Dear Students,

One of our requirements is that students take the GRE exam as part of their admission process. Here is some information about the GRE in case you have questions about this part of the application.

General information about the GRE is available on-line at  https://www.ets.org/gre/

The GRE is offered on an appointment basis at a variety of testing centers.  It is no longer offered on a single-day administration. Through the website provided above, GRE Test-takers create an account, choose a test center from a list, and put in a reservation/appointment to take the test on a particular day. Once you set-up your account, you should go to “Register for the General Test” and the system will ask for your zip code, giving you a range of options of testing centers in your area. Next, the test-taker must make a date and time selection for your appointment. You can choose “Find available seats in a 3 month period” or “Find available seats for a specific day.”  The website asks test-takers to book early because the slots fill up.

The application deadline at UTSA for Fall Semester is July 1. Since it takes a couple of weeks for the scores to arrive at UTSA, and for the Graduate School to process that piece of your application, the test should ideally be taken six weeks before UTSA’s deadline. 

Students sometimes ask how the GRE scores factor into our admissions process. We consider the GRE as one of many parts of the complete application, which includes your statement, your letters of recommendation, your preparation in history, and the grades that you have earned in your studies. We look at your results on the GRE as one piece of the application only.

The graduate program regularly publishes a newsletter that features profiles of UTSA History Alumni, information about upcoming conferences, and great resources for graduate students. You can read it here.

Additionally, as registration opens for the Spring semester, please feel free to call, email, or visit to discuss the best classes for your academic goals in this program.  As one note, HIS 5093 “Designing a History Course” is recommended for all those interested in Nau TA positions and fellowships.

Catherine Clinton on Harriet Tubman

It was recently announced that the new twenty dollar bill would feature Harriet Tubman. As an expert in Tubman's history, our department's own Catherine Clinton was consulted by several press outlets regarding this historic announcement.

In 2005, Clinton released a book titled Harriet Tubman: The Road to Freedom, which is available here and everywhere books are sold. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew cites this book as an important influence on his decision to feature Harriet Tubman on the twenty dollar bill. He discusses the book and his decision in an article by USA TODAY, featured here.
