Antonio Calabria, Associate Professor of History, received a B.A. from Brown University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley. Dr. Calabria specializes in early modern Europe (i.e., ca. 1300-1750). His publications focus on the economic and social life of the Kingdom of Naples in the early modern period, in particular fiscal/financial affairs. His book, The Cost of Empire (Cambridge University Press, 1991) garnered the AMERICAN HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION Marraro Prize for the best book in Italian history in 1991. Another work, Good Government in Spanish Naples (New York and Basel, 1990) is a co-edited book on recent approaches to the history of Naples.

Dr. Calabria has written several articles in the leading Italian and American journals and has reviewed works for several academic journals. He has presented papers or given comments at national and international conferences in the US, Italy and Spain. Dr. Calabria has been working as well on works in the genre of micro history and gender studies in early modern Southern Italy. He has taught courses at all levels, from introductory surveys in world civilization to graduate seminars in European history. His undergraduate teaching focuses on the cultural history of Europe in its economic, social and political context and it is strongly based on the analysis of primary sources. His contribution to the program derives its strength from the comparative and cross-cultural approaches he uses in his teaching and research and from his vast knowledge and experiences as a historian well versed in internationally based archival research projects.
