Current
research project(s):
The construction of a Mexican/Chicano land ethic philosophy based on
19th & 20th century narratives, literature documenting
and describing rancho culture, acequia culture, local
customs/traditions, and sense of place
I will
complete the biography of baseball player Vincent Nava or a
historical novel of his obscure but significant life. In baseball
history, Nava is identified as Black, Indian, Portuguese, Spaniard,
and Cuban. When he dies in
Baltimore, MD in 1906, he is
buried in a Negro cemetery and forgotten as just another baseball
player who was not white but given the opportunity to play major
league baseball in the 1880’s. His identity and ethnicity was
Mexican but somehow ignored throughout his baseball career that
lends itself to postcolonial and critical race theory examination.
