The Alameda/UTSA Endowed Museum Internship

  • Award: Amount and number of awards vary depending on endowment distributions

  • Eligibility

    • Funds distributed from the endowment shall be used each year to fund an internship at the:
      • Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D. C.
      • UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures
      • Kennedy Center
      • or other cultural institutions as deemed appropriate by Dean of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts
    • The internship award shall be provided to a full-time or part-time GRADUATE student enrolled in a graduate program in Anthropology, Art History or History.


    *Preference will be given to students who have completed at least 20 credit hours toward their master’s degree.

    Amount of award varies depending on funds available. Past awards have been approximately $1,000, and are awarded just prior to the start of the internship.

  • Application Requirements

    • Completed Application
    • Essay - a 500-word narrative proposing the organization where they expect to complete their internship. The narrative should explain how the internship experience fits into their academic development and area of study, and what they hope to gain from the experience.


    *In consultation with the graduate advisors of record, applicants are responsible for making internship arrangements.

David Bowen Memorial Endowment For Study In Europe - Spring 2018

  • Eligibility

    • Undergraduate
    • COLFA Major
    • Register with the Office of International Programs
    • Travel experience must be at least two weeks in duration

Dwight F. Henderson Endowed Scholarship In History

  • Award: Amount and number of awards vary depending on endowment distributions

  • Eligibility

    • Undergraduate or Graduate Student
    • Major in History
    • Undergraduates must have completed at least 12 hours in HIS classes and graduate students must have completed 6 graduate semester credit hours.
    • 3.0 GPA

Ernest And Aimee Bromley Endowed Presidential Scholarship In The Liberal Arts

  • Award: Amount and number of awards vary depending on endowment distributions

  • Eligibility

    • Must be an undergraduate or graduate student with a declared a major in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts  

    • Recipient must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours and actively pursuing a degree in Liberal Arts in the College. An exception to full-time enrollment may be granted by the Dean on a case-by-case basis when the student is not required to take a full course load to graduate, provided the student is enrolled in a minimum of six credits hours. 

    • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0

Hewitt Family Annual Scholarship in COLFA

  • Award: $1,000

  • Eligibility

    This is a late award for the current 2017-18 Academic year

    • Must be an undergraduate or graduate student with a declared a major in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts
    • Must be enrolled full-time status (minimum of 12 semester credit hours for undergraduates and 9 semester credit hours for graduate students)
    • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
    • Recipients must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours and must demonstrate leadership capabilities in their school and community through volunteer efforts

  • Award: 1 Award of $2000

  • Eligibility

    • Students must be an undergraduate or graduate student with a major or concentration in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts. *Preference will be given to students with a major in geography
    • Must have and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA
    • Must be enrolled on a full-time basis, 12 hours for undergraduate and 9 hours for graduate

Kenneth Alan Hovey Endowed Memorial Scholarship

  • Eligibility

    • Undergraduate or Graduate Student
    • Major in Humanities, Philosophy & Classics, or English
    • Completed at least 60 hours (undergraduate)
    • Enrolled full-time (12 hours undergraduate and 9 hours graduate)
    • 3.0 GPA (undergraduate) and 3.5 GPA (graduate)

Nau Graduate Fellowship in History

  • Award: Up to 8 students will be selected as Nau Fellows and will receive awards of $5,500 to $11,000 each for the academic year 2019-2020. Recipients will also be eligible for in-state tuition.

  • Eligibility

    • Graduate fellowships are available for students with scholarly interests in all areas of history.
    • We recommend a minimum G.P.A. of 3.5 in the last 60 hours of coursework.
    • Recipients must be enrolled in a minimum of 3 credit hours.
  • Application Requirements

    • Brief essay discussing how a particular book or author has helped to shape your interest in history and in what ways the book or author encourages you to think broadly about an historical topic. (700 words or less)
    • Writing sample of your academic work in History (you may resubmit the writing sample from your Graduate School Application).
    • 2 Letters of recommendation from History faculty at previous graduate or undergraduate institution.

Nau Teaching Assistantship in History

  • Award: 5 Teaching assistants will receive $15,000 per year and will be eligible for in-state tuition rates.

  • Eligibility

    • Teaching Assistants will be selected to work up to 19 hours per week assisting faculty mostly in upper division history courses. The application will have a rolling deadline until all positions are filled.3.5 GPA in graduate history courses
    • Teaching Assistantships are available for students with scholarly interests in all areas of history.
    • Applicants must have successfully completed HIS 5003 “Introduction to History: Theory and Methods.” It is recommended that applicants have taken HIS 5093 “Designing a History Course.”
    • Recommended G.P.A. of 3.5 or higher in graduate history courses.
    • Recipients must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 hours during the fall semester of the award year. Recipients may be enrolled in fewer than 6 hours in the spring semester only if they are graduating in the spring and need fewer than 6 hours.
    • Teaching Assistants are required to attend all class meetings of the course to which they have been assigned and to hold regularly scheduled office hours.
  • Application Requirements

    Brief essay in response to the following:

    1. Describe your interest in and approach to teaching. In your response, please discuss the teaching style you found most effective as an undergraduate student as well as your previous academic or non-academic teaching experiences, if any. (1,000 words max.)

    2. Please specify if you have an interest in the following areas of study: Texas History, Borderlands History, or Civil War Era.

    3. Two letters of recommendation from UTSA History faculty members.

Nau Undergraduate Scholarship in History

  • Award: Up to 5 students will be selected as Nau Scholars to receive awards of $10,000 each for the academic year 2019-2020. Recipients will also be eligible for in-state tuition.

  • Eligibility

    • Recipients must be enrolled full-time (12 to 15 hours) during the fall semester of the award year. Recipients may be enrolled in fewer than 15 hours in the spring semester only if they are graduating in the spring and need fewer than 15 hours to graduate.
    • Recommended minimum GPA of 3.0 (or 3.5 in the last thirty hours completed).
    • Students must be a Junior (minimum 75 hours completed) at time of application and currently be enrolled in or have successfully completed HIS 2003 Historical Methods.
    • Recipients must enroll in “Seminar in History” (HIS 4973) or "Honors Thesis" (HIS 4993) during award year or have completed the course prior to start of award year.
  • Application Requirements

    • Brief essay (700 words or less) discussing a book you have read in a college-level History course that has shaped your understanding of the past and inspired your interest in history.
    • Writing sample of your academic work in History (e.g. book review, historiographic essay, research paper).
    • 1-2 Letters of recommendation from UTSA History faculty (transfer students may use a faculty member from a previously attended college or university).
