Brackenridge Endowed Chair in Literature and the Humanities Dr. Sonja Lanehart has been invited to collaborate on a $150,000 National Science Foundation grant for the production of the documentary film “Talking Black in America.” Walt Wolfram, William C. Friday Distinguished University Professor at North Carolina State University and Director of the North Carolina Language and Life Project, is the principal investigator for the grant.
“Talking Black in America,” will be the first documentary film entirely on language use in the African American community produced by sociolinguists, educational linguistics, linguistic anthropologists, and language variationists. Previous projects are either outdated or lacking in meaningful content. As an expert in the field, Dr. Lanehart’s collaboration is considered “invaluable in the effort” to the success of the project, according to Dr. Wolfram.
