Dr. Rhonda M. Gonzales, interim dean of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Seok Kang to the position ofAssociate Dean for Research effective Feb. 1, 2020.
“I am honored to serve as the Association Dean for Research in COLFA. Taking over the excellence of the current research program, I will develop a sustainable research tradition with a positive impact on the College and UTSA,” Dr. Kang said. “As the incoming Associate Dean for Research, I would like to recognize COLFA faculty’s research achievements.”
Dr. Kang will assist the dean with the management of administrative functions associated with all aspects of developing and managing research-related activities in the college. His primary job responsibilities include:
Increasing external research funding
Increasing faculty publication and citation rates
Guiding development of new research teams and collaborations
Assisting faculty in research matters
Coordinating with UTSA Research Support Centers and other support staff
Fostering student research, organizing the annual COLFA Spring Student Research Conference
Liaising with the Office of the Vice President for Research
Collaborating with the dean on planning college strategic initiatives
Dr. Kang is a professor in digital communication with an emphasis on mobile media effects, digital journalism, social media effects and digital media production. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia, his M.A. from Illinois State University, an M.A. from Sogang University, Seoul Korea, and his B.A. from Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul Korea. His teaching and research areas focus on new communication technologies, mobile communication, m-marketing, social media, big data analysis, virtual reality, augmented reality, communication research methods, theory, and digital message design. Dr. Kang has published six single author books, 41 refereed journal articles and 14 co-author books and book chapters. He is an editorial board member of Mass Communication & Society. He is a member of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), International Communication Association (ICA), and Broadcast Education Association (BEA).
Dr. Kang will serve as associate dean for research through fiscal year 2021; a continued appointment may occur at the discretion of the dean on an annual basis. His plans for the research program include publishing an annual research report that describes COLFA faculty members’ research efforts over the past year and sets research goals for the upcoming year. He would also like to publish an e-newsletter that highlights research stories and achievements of active scholars in the college and foster robust social media pages for COLFA research promotion, collaboration, and announcements.
