FACULTY WORKSHOP: Championing First-Generation Student Success in the Classroom

Wednesday, February 24, 2016 2:00pm – 3:00pm

JPL 4.04.12C,  Faculty Center Conference Room

Nearly 50% of UTSA’s entering freshmen class is comprised of first-generation students. First-gen students reach our institution embodying assets that are often overlooked: determination, resilience, tenacity, and critical thinking skills. Being the first in one’s family to reach for a college education can be challenging. But the challenge isn’t usually academic, as one might imagine. Most first-generation students “have what it takes” to succeed academically, but many of them are tugged away from their studies due to economic and family reasons. This interactive workshop imparts a number of techniques that all faculty can easily incorporate into curriculum culture to help champion first-gen success from arrival to graduation.
