Background

The Department of Political Science and Geography offers a wide range of coursework in local, state, national and international geography and political science topics that will prepare students for graduate study and a chosen career.

Geography

Geography is the study of human spatial behavior and the location of human activities and their reciprocal relationship with the physical environment.  Geographic fields of study include the analysis of human movement and perception and the spatial inequities in economic and social institutions (social geography); settlement processes and patterns through history (historical geography); principles underlying the location of economic activities (economic geography); political boundaries and behavior over space (political geography); impact of human activities on the physical environment (resource conservation); and the analysis and mapping of spatial data (geographic information systems, or GIS); as well as other fields.

Political Science
Political science is the study of social power and political authority.  While one focus of political science is on government institutions, it also focuses on the political processes through which citizens participate in public affairs.  Political scientists also study power in nongovernmental contexts, such as inter-group relations (e.g., race, class, ethnic, gender relations) and economic institutions (e.g., industries, firms, unions); develop expertise in conflict resolution and problem solving; and study normative and historical theories of the patterns of political relationships in human societies.
