Dr. Garcia joined the Sociology department at UTSA in 2008. She received her M.S. and Ph.D. in Sociology with a concentration in Social Demography from Texas A&M in August of 2008. Her research interests include social demography, health disparities (with particular emphasis on sexually transmitted infections and obesity), poverty, immigration, and quantitative methods. At UTSA she teaches quantitative methods in the social sciences at the undergraduate and graduate level, and research design. She has published a book based on her thesis work, which explores the proliferation and spread of STI’s in the United States and China. Dr. Garcia is currently doing research on obese patients who have sought out and/or completed a bariatric procedure. In addition, she is working on a multi-level analysis of poverty among Mexican immigrants in the Southwest.
