Biography
David Ray Vance, Assistant Professor, received his M.A. in English with Specialization in Creative Writing from the University of Illinois at Chicago and his PhD in Literature and Creative Writing (with a Women’s Studies Certificate) from the University of Houston. He has taught previously at University of Houston, The University of Colorado at Boulder, Metropolitan State College of Denver, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Roosevelt University in Chicago. His teaching interests include Creative Writing (Poetry and Fiction); American Literature after 1865, particularly Modern and Contemporary American Poetry and Fiction; 19th Century British and American Literatures; Science and Literature; Hybrid and Mixed/Inter-Media Poetry and Poetics; and Literary Publishing.
Dr. Vance’s poems and stories have appeared in such journals as Denver Quarterly, Chicago Review, Notre Dame Review, Texas Observer and McSweeney’s. as well as in the anthologies Is This Forever or What?—Poems and Paintings from Texas (Greenwillow/Harper Collins) and Art at our Doorstep: San Antonio Writers and Artists (Trinity University Press). His essay, “Mark Nowak: Documentary Praxis [Redux]” appears in American Poets in the 21st Century: The New Poetics (Wesleyan UP). Dr. Vance’s first full-length collection, titled Vitreous, won the 2005 Del Sol Press Prize and was published in 2007. Vitreous has appeared twice on the Poetry Foundation’s Best Seller List and has been reviewed in Pebble Lake Review, The San Antonio Express News, and Disability Studies Quarterly. More...
Dr. Vance co-edits the journal American Letters & Commentary, a nationally recognized literary annual devoted to publishing “innovative and challenging” writing and art, and he serves as faculty adviser for Sagebrush Review, UTSA’s student-run literary annual
