Scholarships
All scholarships awarded by the College of Liberal and Fine Arts require the recipient to: major in a discipline within the College of Liberal and Fine Arts and actively pursue a degree; unless otherwise stated, be enrolled full-time: 12 hours for undergraduate students and 9 hours for graduate students; unless otherwise noted, the application deadline for all scholarships is February 15.
UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS
STEVEN G. KELLMAN AWARD FOR CREATIVE NON-FICTION
Award: Two awards, first place and second place. First place award will be twice the amount of the second place award. This year’s award amounts are $1,000 for first place award and $500 for second place.
Criteria:
-Must be enrolled full time in an undergraduate degree program (minimum 12 credit hours) at UTSA.
-Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Application requirements: Steven G. Kellman Award for Creative Non-Fiction application; submission of a creative non-fiction essay of up to 4,000 words; and cover letter stating title of work, and that it is original, previously unpublished work. (Award recipients are required to write thank-you letters to donors.)
LILLIAN WALD BELLER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Number of awards and amounts vary
Criteria:
-Must have completed at least 60 hours of college credit
-Must be enrolled full time (minimum 12 credit hours)
-Must be an English major and must apply to the Teacher Certification Program at UTSA
-Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
-Preference given to single parents, male or female, who are supporting dependent children in their home
Application requirements: Lillian Wald Beller Endowed Scholarship application, and nonfiction writing sample of 600-900 words on a topic of literary criticism
DAVIDSON-SHADDOX CREATIVE WRITING SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Number of awards and amounts vary
Criteria:
-Must have declared an undergraduate major in English and have completed at least 60 hours of college credit
-Must be enrolled full time (minimum 12 credit hours)
-Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA in English courses
-Must enroll in an upper-level creative writing course during the academic year in which the award is given
Application requirements: Davidson-Shaddox Creative Writing Scholarship application and letter, and submission of a creative writing manuscript (poetry or prose)
EILEEN LUNDY SCHOLARSHIP FOR EXCELLENCE IN ENGLISH EDUCATION
Award: Number of awards and amounts vary
Criteria:
-Must be returning to college, with preference given to students who have not attended college full time for a period of 10 years or more, and who have completed a minimum of 60 hours with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
-Must be enrolled full time (minimum 12 credit hours)
-Must have declared an undergraduate major in English
-Must demonstrate financial need
Application requirements: Eileen Lundy Scholarship for Excellence in English Education application and a 250- to 500-word essay describing reasons for wanting to teach English at the high school or college level
MONIQUE M. PRICE SCHOLARSHIP IN ENGLISH
Award: Number of awards and amounts vary
Criteria:
-Must be a current undergraduate student enrolled in at least 12 credit hours as an English major
-Must have a GPA of 3.3 to receive the scholarship
-Must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA during the year receiving the scholarship
Application requirements: Monique M. Price Scholarship application and a 300-word essay on how the scholarship will benefit the applicant in future academic endeavors and goals
WADE RICHMOND ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Number of awards and amounts vary
Criteria:
-Must have completed at least 60 hours of college credit
-Must be an English major actively pursuing literary studies and enrolled full time (minimum 12 credit hours)
-Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
Application requirements: Wade Richmond Endowed Scholarship application and nonfiction writing manuscript of 600-900 words on a topic of literary criticism
Kenneth Alan Hovey Endowed Memorial Scholarship
Award: One or more awards; amount varies; both undergraduate and graduate students may be awarded
Criteria:
-Must be actively pursuing a degree in the Department of English, Classics, and Philosophy as an English or Humanities undergraduate major or as an English graduate major.
-Undergraduate applicants must have completed at least 60 hours of college credit at the time of application.
-Must be enrolled full time (minimum 12 credit hours for undergraduates or 9 credit hours for graduate students enrolled in the English master’s or doctoral program) during the academic year in which the award is received.
-Must have and maintain a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA with a declared major in the undergraduate English or Humanities degrees or must have and maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA in all courses for the English graduate degrees.
Application requirements: Kenneth Alan Hovey Scholarship application form and one- to two-page application letter
GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS:
The scholarships listed below are based on the following criteria, application requirements, and deadline: Must be a graduate student in English (or be accepted into the program); Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2.
Application requirements: application form, writing sample (8 to 10 pages; literary analysis), and three letters of recommendation, at least one of which addresses the applicant's potential as a teacher; see graduate advisor for specific criteria and requirements. Deadline is February 15.

2009 WENDY BARKER CREATIVE WRITING AWARD
Submissions: 5-10 pages of poetry (one poem on each page) and/or 10-15 pages short fiction or creative non-fiction (prose should be double-spaced; do not submit your only copy).
Criteria: Must be a graduate student.
Application requirements: Include ONE cover page with name, mailing address, e-mail address, phone number and titles of all submissions. Submit three copies of work. Your name should not be anywhere else except on the cover page.

ALAN E. CRAVEN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Number of awards and amounts vary
Criteria:
-Must be a graduate student majoring in English
-Must register and complete a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester during the academic year for which the scholarship is awarded
-Must have a minimum cumulative 3.2 GPA
Application requirements: Alan E. Craven Endowed Scholarship Application, one- to two page letter of application, three letters of recommendation, 8-10 page sample literary analysis, and GRE scores (these scores will only be used in comparison with applicants of similar socioeconomic background)
*NEW* RICHARD AND JOYCE HARRIS SAPIENCE FOUNDATION GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP
Award: Fellowship will provide $10,000 per year for at least two consecutive years.
Criteria:
-Applicants must be accepted into or currently enrolled in the master’s
degree program in English at UTSA
-Must submit application along with a 3-page essay to the Graduate
Office of the English Department, explaining why they are deserving of
the Fellowship and the impact receiving the Fellowship will have on
their lives, academic studies, and careers.
-Preference will be given to applicants who are single parents with
dependent children. (This criterion will be given preference over
GPA.)
-One (1) recipient will be selected to receive a $10,000 renewable
award, disbursed in equal installments of $5,000 in the fall and
spring semesters.
-The recipient must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 throughout
the period of award.
-The recipient must be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credit hours
each fall and spring semester.
-This Fellowship is automatically renewable for up to two (2)
additional consecutive years provided the recipient continues to meet
the minimum award criteria.
Application Requirements: Completed Harris Sapience Foundation Graduate Fellowship application.
KEITH THOMAS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Number of awards and amounts vary
Criteria:
-Must be enrolled and in good standing in a graduate program in English (MA or PhD) at UTSA
-Must be enrolled in at least 6 hours of graduate credit in English during the term of the award
-Must have a minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA
Application requirements: Keith Thomas Memorial Scholarship Application, one- to two page letter of application, three letters of recommendation, 8-10 page sample literary analysis, and GRE scores (these scores will only be used in comparison with applicants of similar socioeconomic background)
