Biography

My research focuses on constructions of black femininity in literature, film and popular culture, specifically comic books and hip hop videos. My current monograph project is tentatively titled The Perils of Strength: Black Women in Contemporary Horror and focuses on constructions of black femininity in horror literature, film, television and comic books. I am also in the process of co-editing a volume of theoretical examinations of black femininity in hip hop videos.

My teaching interests include 20th-Century African American literature and film with a specific focus on black feminist theory, horror, and science fiction. I continue to incorporate all manner of texts in my classes, including film, television, comic books and graphic novels. Many of my courses are cross-listed with African American Studies, American Studies, and Women’s Studies. I am a Women’s Studies Institute faculty affiliate.

I am a native of New Orleans and enjoy the company of good friends, good family, and good food!
